Review: Goo Goo Dolls at Manchester Academy

Eighteen years. That’s how long it’s been since Goo Goo Dolls’ frontman John Rzeznik heard the band’s song ‘Name’ on the radio as he was doing his supermarket shopping.

As he said during Thursday’s gig at Manchester Academy: “That’s when I knew that I didn’t ever have to go back to work.”

You could feel the nostalgia in the room.

Eighteen years means that most of the crowd would have been teenagers when that song was released.

The Goo Goo Dolls provided a soundtrack to their formative years – and they got through a fair chunk of their back catalogue, rampaging from one song to the next with no let-up in their energy, enthusiasm or skill.

There was new material too.

More country, perhaps a little more poppy, definitely softer. But then it has been eighteen years.

People change.
