Friday, Goo Goo Dolls return with their 11th studio album, Boxes. It's their first album since 2013's Magnetic, and lead singer Johnny Rzeznik says the title has to do with "wanting to belong."

Johnny says he liked Boxes for an album title in addition to being the name of a song on the album -- it's "short and concise."  "It sort of represents a lot of different things," he tells ABC Radio. "You know, it’s like the boxes that we put ourselves into."

"I try to look back on, thematically what a lot of the music that I’ve written and lyrics that I’ve written have been about," Johnny explains. "And it’s always about this sorta sense of wanting to belong, you know? And it’s just sort of like, I would love to have a box that I belonged in.  But I don't."

Johnny may feel like he doesn't belong, but a whole lot of people must also feel that way, because the Goos have booked a major summer headlining tour starting in July.

While the band definitely wants to play new material on the tour, Johnny says the Goos' long string of hits -- from "Name," "Slide" and "Iris" to "Better Days" and "Here Is Gone" -- means there are a bunch of songs they're pretty much obligated to play at every show.

"Yeah, we got about 14 of those," Johnny laughs. "I mean we’re definitely gonna do some stuff from Boxes and, throw in a couple of surprises. It’s time to do something different."

The tour, which will see the band playing iconic venues like The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, starts July 8 in Portland, OR, and wraps up in Las Vegas on September 16.
