The Bottom Line

There has rarely been a better time for a warm, hopeful song like Goo Goo Dolls' "Better Days." Johnny Rzeznik's vocals strike just the right note of surface weariness with an underlying strength to carry on. This single should do quite well on pop radio.

Guide Review - Goo Goo Dolls - Better Days (Warner Bros.)

The Goo Goo Dolls seem to have figured out that their fans are getting tired of waiting for new studio material. This single is a warmup for the band's next album, but the album is not due for release until over 3 months from now in early 2006. It has been 3 years since the last studio album Gutterflower and the band has only released a live album in the interim. If "Better Days" is truly a sample of what will be the spirit and sound of the next album, the wait will have been worth it.

The words of "Better Days" are infused with a pleasing warmth. With the U.S. reeling from the impact of 2 hurricanes and heavy violence continuing in Iraq, the words "Everyone is forgiven now, cuz tonight's the night the world begins again" effectively deliver a warmth and reassurance that is badly needed.

Musically, there is little unique or challenging in "Better Days," but that is not required to give the song its impact. The band's subtle backup for Johnny Rzeznik's vocals delivers just the right touch for a major radio hit.
